Before joining the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, Dr. Weizhuo Shi worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering Department at Iowa State University, where he received his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering. His research primarily focuses on structural engineering, with the objective of applying durable materials and innovative structural options into building and bridge structures to achieve sustainability goals and enhance the safety and resiliency of the developed solutions against various environmental and mechanical stressors.


He has also attended and presented the outcome of his research in a number of conferences, where he received several awards, such as the Best Poster Award in the 2018 ACI Better Concrete Conference and the Best Oral Presentation in the 3rd Annual Graduate Students Research Conference at Iowa State University. He was also awarded the Postdoctoral Seed Grant from Iowa State University. He currently serves as a member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Research Interests

Dr. Weizhuo Shi has been involved in multiple funded research projects for national and provincial agencies, covering a broad spectrum of scientific and engineering topics related to the structures and materials that can enhance the safety and performance of civil infrastructures. His current research interests include (1) investigating the use of structural corrosion-resistant steel; (2) utilizing innovative design for connections in precast structural components; (3) characterizing the durability and transport properties for the use of high-performance cementitious materials; (4) developing the innovative cold spray systems for structural steel repairs; (5) performing structural health monitoring to evaluate long-term performance for structures; (6) employing appropriate physics-based models for the deterioration process of RC bridges; and (7) developing the energy-efficient building materials.
