Professor Alain Chong is Vice Provost for Research and Knowledge Exchange and Chair Professor of Information Systems and Digital Innovation at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC). He is a member of the University’s senior leadership team and leads the development and implementation of UNNC’s research and knowledge exchange strategy, including research excellence, research funding, doctoral education, innovation, industry engagement and research impact.
Professor Chong has held a range of senior academic leadership positions at UNNC, including Vice Provost for Global Engagement and Partnerships, Dean of the Graduate School, Faculty Director of Research, and Head of the Information Systems group. During his tenure as Dean of the Graduate School, he contributed to the substantial expansion of doctoral education at UNNC and the development of doctoral training partnerships with leading universities and research institutions in China and internationally.
His research focuses on digital innovation and the transformative implications of emerging technologies for organisations, markets and society. His work spans artificial intelligence, digital platforms and ecosystems, fintech and digital inclusion, algorithmic technologies, digital sustainability, and technology-enabled organisational and consumer change. His research frequently draws on large-scale behavioural and organisational data to examine how digital technologies reshape decision making, innovation and value creation.
Professor Chong has published extensively in leading international journals in information systems, innovation, marketing and operations management, including Research Policy, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of the Association for Information Systems, Information Systems Journal, Journal of Information Technology, International Journal of Operations & Production Management, Information & Management, Decision Support Systems, and Transportation Research Part B. His research has received substantial international citations and has been recognised through inclusion in Elsevier’s Highly Cited Chinese Researchers list and Stanford University’s global list of the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists.
He has received competitive research funding from organisations including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the UK Royal Society and the Hong Kong Research Grants Council. His international recognitions include the West Lake Friendship Award and the Ten Outstanding Young Malaysians Award.
Professor Chong also contributes extensively to the international academic community through journal leadership and editorial service. He serves in senior editorial and associate editorial roles for international journals in information systems and management and regularly collaborates with researchers, universities, government organisations and industry partners internationally.
