Abstract

A study on the roughness improvement of epoxy by incorporating carbon nanotubes (CNT) into the resin was presented. The impact toughness was remarkably improved by 70% for incorporating only 0.5 wt% CNTs into the resin. It was observed that the surface treatment of CNTs in HNO3 could further improve the mechanical properties, especially the impact toughness and elongation at break, probably due to better interfacial bonding, proven by x ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
