The properties of the composites fabricated by a novel semi-prepreg RTM technique

Abstract

A novel semi-prepreg (prepreg with low resin content) RTM (resin transfer molding) technique was developed to address preforming difficulties associated with RTM process and to improve the mechanical properties of the resulting composites. Unidirectional semi-prepregs exhibiting relatively good overlay characteristics were prepared via prepolymerization of bismaleimide (BMI) resin followed by wet winding, and then the obtained semi-prepreg were placed into the RTM mould cured after the injection of RTM-able BMI resin. The processing characteristics and mechanical properties of the composites fabricated via semi-prepreg RTM technique were compared with the composites produced by using normal RTM process. Experimental results showed that the laminates fabricated by the semi-prepreg RTM technique had comparative internal quality and mechanical properties with the laminates fabricated by the normal RTM process.
