Abstract

Under the theme "Future of Design Education in Emerging Economies", this study investigates the educational challenges and opportunities in training future object designers within emerging economies, focusing on higher education institutions in India and Mexico. Grounded in the premise that we live in an object-based world shaped by design, the work emphasizes the responsibility of design educators to prepare students not only to meet commercial demands but also to contribute meaningfully to human development. Through a comparative mixed-methods approach involving ten institutions, the research identifies key factors influencing teaching and learning processes, such as contextual social and economic differences, faculty industry engagement (the concept of the pracademic), group sizes, infrastructure quality, student work experience, pedagogical methods, and curriculum relevance. The findings suggest that while India and Mexico share similarities as analogue nations, a context-specific and learner-centered approach is essential for nurturing socially responsive and future-ready designers.
