Abstract
Flow behaviour in pouring basins is investigated through numerical simulation using the general purpose CFD code FLOW-3D. These studies agree closely, and augment earlier identified studies using the code FLUENT. Studies of three different types of pouring basins have shown that the performance of a basin with a weir step and with a smoothly round sprue entrance confirms that the off-set weir design of pouring basin is beneficial. With this favourable design, liquid metal enters the sprue quiescently and with a smoothly distributed inlet velocity field over the entrance to the sprue.
