Abstract

The industrial doctorate, as an alternative to the traditional Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), emerged in the UK a decade ago. This article explores the knowledge economy, knowledge, doctorates, and their relationships. It also studies doctoral education with a comparison of the traditional PhD, ProfDoc, and industrial doctorate in terms of purpose, selection, curriculum, learning and supervision, assessment, and outcome. A case study is conducted through documentary study and participant observation to examine a Doctor of Engineering (EngD) program in a Center for Doctoral Training sponsored by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council in the UK. It finds that the EngD program in this Center for Doctoral Training is an industrial doctorate program. The industrial doctorate better fits the development of the knowledge economy, while it has its limitations.
