Personal profile

Dr Kok Hoong Wong is an Associate Professor in Composite Materials at the University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China. He received a BEng in Materials and Manufacturing Engineering from the Sheffield Hallam University, UK in 2000 and then worked as a polymer composite production engineer in Malaysia for 2 years before moving to the University of Nottingham to complete a PhD degree in mechanical engineering in 2007. His PhD thesis focused on the use of recycled carbon fibre for electromagnetic interference shielding application. He became a research fellow in the same university and involved in numerous carbon fibre recycling and reuse projects.

Currently his research is centred on sustainability development in general and continue working on composite waste recycling and reuse. He also carries out research in composite manufacturing technology development and has been involved in several projects developing reuse applications for recycled carbon and glass fibres. Ongoing projects include developing economical viable reuse solutions for end-of-life wind turbine blades, optimisation of pyrolysis recycling process and discontinuous fibre alignment technology development.

Past projects involved improvement to physical form of the recycled fibre by conversion into non-woven mat and subsequent composite manufacture via resin transfer moulding. Other projects include development of economical processes for discontinuous fibre alignment, a key to boost commercial value of the recycled fibres by maximising their reinforcement potential. He worked on fluidised bed recycling process to upgrade its technology readiness level. He is also familiar with characterisation methods for the recycled fibre.
