N2 - The drop-tube furnace is a valuable tool when attempting to simulate coal combustion on a small scale. High heating rates, variable gas contents and high temperatures are all possible. A general review of current conditions used for the production of chars is given along with results for char production under various conditions including the effect of particle size.
