abstract = "This paper presents a comprehensive comparison between squirrel cage induction motors optimally designed with single and double cages for direct main-fed applications. The effect of adopting open and closed rotor slot geometry is also deeply investigated. The design-based comparison makes use of an innovative fast and accurate performance evaluation method embedded into an automatic design procedure to optimize different rotor slot geometries. The aim of this work is to quantify the advantages and drawbacks of adopting different rotor cage structures in terms of starting and rated performance adopting the same design optimization process. The presented results can be used as general design guidelines of squirrel cage induction motors for industrial applications.",
