Expertise summary
One of my research interests is elastoplastic constitutive modeling of soil stress-strain responses. I also study numerical integration schemes of soil models. The numerically integrated models are employed within the framework of the finite element method to study behaviors of various geotechnical engineering applications under both static and dynamic loading such as earthquake and wave loading.
While I was a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, I studied behaviors of granular solid flow in silos using the finite element method with large displacement and the discrete element method. I also worked closely with the industry through a project funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Another research interest is to experimentally study soil behavior by using the double directional simple shear system and the hollow cylinder apparatus, together with the hollow cylinder apparatus. The VDDCSS system (Variable Direction Dynamic Cyclic Simple Shear) manufactured by GDS UK is used in the experimental study.
As the principal investigator, I was awarded a few important research grants including the RAE grant, NSFC grant, municipal natural science grant and international cooperation grant. As a co-investigator, I participated in the Key Project of Chinese National Programs for Fundamental Research and Development (973 Program).
