Abstract
This paper answers the question, what happens when man creates in his own image in the absence of woman. Analyzing Mary Shelley's Frankenstein within the context of 18th and 19th century debates on vitalism vs. materialism, this paper argues--contra most other critics--that M. Shelley was a theistic vitalist, despite the strong atheistic materialism of her husband Percy Shelley.
