Abstract

China continues to broaden its engagements with African countries. In recent times, vaccine diplomacy has been added to the arsenals that the East Asian country has to engage African countries. China’s dominance in the economic space of African countries impacts the influence of the Western countries that have been historically active in cooperating with Africa. What are the critical issues in 2022 which should be monitored? In this article, we discuss the Africa-China cooperation and the topical issues to monitor. Some of the issues include vaccine diplomacy, debt trap and agreements, Africa-US relations, climate change and environmental issues as well as, the belt and roads initiative (BRI). We argue that African diplomats need to be more strategic and explore avenues for their countries to optimally benefit from international relations with the West or other Global South countries.
