Abstract

This chapter discusses why and how information technology (IT) and associated technologies are making, driving, and facilitating profound changes in important business and management processes. The transformation of business enterprises is possible due to low transaction and coordination costs, location independence, organizational flattening/flexibility, decentralization/empowerment, and collaborative work and teamwork. It also describes the major technological and economic trends in digitization; identifies the fundamental values of IT in business and management; and articulates the impact of these trends and values on organizations.
