Abstract

Medicine is moving towards personalized treatments, where the ultimate goal is that both drug delivery devices and loaded pharmaceutica tablets can be customized to meet the specific needs of individuals. The evolution of additive manufacturing (AM) is accelerating the progress to meet this target. Manufacturing oral solid dosage forms with customized geometries and releasing profiles through different AM techniques has been widely studied in recent years and is moving to practical applications. The recent multi-material AM techniques also bring a new manufacturing strategy to customize complex therapeutics for more complicated health problems, where a combined and controlled release of multiple actives is needed. We will look into the choices of materials and active pharmaceutical ingredients available for AM of personalized medicine, and compare and explain the key advantages and limitations of the available techniques for small-scale and large-scale production, to provide the reader with an in-depth view of this emerging field.
