Abstract

"Passivhaus", originally a German term and commonly referred to as "Passive House" in English, represents a category of green building which features a high level of indoor comfort with a minimal heating and cooling load (PHI,2015). This chapter introduces the development of the Passivhaus theory, basic design principles, certification standards and typical practices of Passivhaus buildings. Since its foundation in the 1990s, the theoretical framework of Passivhaus has progressively matured, allowing its technical systems to be adapted to different climatic regions and different types of new construction or retrofit projects. The promotion of Passivhaus buildings can be seen as an effective approach to reducing the operational energy consumption of buildings and meanwhile improving interior thermal comfort.
