Abstract

The fluid flow and heat transfer involved in polymer melt flow in extrusion manufacturing process have been investigated with our numerical model based on finite volume method, using non-Newtonian polyvinyl chloride (PVC) melt flow as demonstration. Power law constitutive model is adopted and the rheological characters of polymer melt have been investigated. Essential flow characteristics of polymer melts in the extrusion pipe have been demarcated. The fields of velocity, pressure and temperature distribution have been evaluated. Our findings will enable in-depth understanding of polymer flow mechanisms, leading to optimized polymer extrusion technique to facilitate the design and manufacturing process.
