Abstract

Cities are challenged by many problems, where problems related to urban climates are very critical. However, existing efforts in both academia and industries are not enough to close the gaps among urban climate science, mitigation and adaptation strategies, and planning and design practices. This pushes relevant stakeholders to deepen basic and applied research on incorporating urban climate into urban design. This chapter, a brief outline of the book titled Urban Climate and Urban Design, is designed to demonstrate how researchers and stakeholders from different fields are working together to promote the incorporation of urban climate sciences and advanced and emerging technologies into the practices of urban planning and design. This chapter charts the aim, objectives, and structures of the book. Afterwards, the key information of all chapters in four parts including (i) Urban Climate Monitoring, Assessing, and Forecasting, (ii) Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies, (iii) Advanced and Emerging Design Models and Tools, and (iv) Action Plans and Policy Formulation are presented.
