Mythopoeic Responses to the Great War: Escape, Recovery, and Consolation in the Postwar Fantasy of Lord Dunsany, J. R. R. Tolkien, and C. S. Lewis

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaperpeer-review

Abstract

This presentation locates the mythopoeic fantasy of Dunsany, Tolkien, and Lewis within the context of post-WWI literary production, analyzing the ways in which these writers, even though they experienced the horrors of war, did not succumb to the disillusionment and despair of many other postwar writers and artists. Instead, they used mythopoeic fantasy to write a literature of escape and consolation that provided hope and recovery from the emotional horror and psychological despair of WWI.
