Myth and Metafiction in George MacDonald’s Phantastes: Mythopoeic Reading as Spiritual Sanctification

Abstract

This presentation analyzes the metafictional elements of this classic Victorian mythopoeic fantasy novel and argues that these metafictional elements provide structure and unity to the novel and reveals MacDonald's theology of love, grace, and salvation. This paper won first prize in the CSLIS 2016 Scholar Writing Contest.
