LANs and Routing - a University Course for Professonal Network Engineers

Abstract

The local area network (LAN) has come to play a central role in information distribution and office functioning within businesses and other organizations. 'LANs and Routing' (L&R) is a subject being taught at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). The main aim of this subject is to enable students to develop an understanding of different LAN types and routers as interconnecting devices. The course teaching is strongly based on desktop computers. Students are given opportunities to design and set up simple internets of LANs using 'Cisco' routers. In this paper, we critically reflect on the teaching of this subject by research on course design, student learning and evaluation, course assessment and face to face teaching.
