Abstract
Many coal cleaning devices rely on relative density as the basis for separation. Definitive performance information is scarce, requires full characterization of the products and is expensive to obtain. It involves extensive float/sink data over a wide range of densities, at close density intervals. Unexplained irregularities in this data and the non-repeatability of results have led to a re-appraisal of the process. An inorganic salt solution has been extensively tested against the usual organic compounds. This liquid has been used in a parallel technique for the float/sink procedure. Results are also presented on the effect of coal porosity.
