Abstract

The objective of this research project is to investigate the potential for the use of the liquidsolid circulating fluidized bed (LSCFB) ion exchanger for the efficient and continuous extraction of soy proteins from soy milk. Current technologies make use of acid precipitation techniques which can prove detrimental to proteins. The LSCFB technology provides a continuous, efficient, and gentle method for protein recovery. The liquid-solid circulating fluidized bed continuous ion-exchanger provides for simultaneous protein adsorption and desorption using two inter-connected fluidized beds. This patented technology has been proven successful for extraction of proteins from whey and is currently being investigated for soy protein recovery. The introduction of such a system for soy protein processing opens the possibility of developing an industry that can efficiently and cost effectively produce unique protein products of high integrity, value, and market acceptance.
