Abstract

The ability of plain strain method in characterizing the 3D stress state under unidirectional simple shear is studied using experiments and discrete element modelling. The experiments are used to validate the modelling. The modelling, however, is used to capture the development of lateral normal stresses that cannot be measured in laboratory. The stress tensor in terms of all stress components is used to represent the complete stress state in granular material. Results calculated form the plain strain method are compared with those from the tensor method. It is demonstrated that the plain strain method has the ability to reflect important characteristics of 3D stress state in unidirectional simple shear test. But neglecting intermediate principal stress and intermediate principal fabric may cause inaccuracy in describing the 3D stress path and 3D fabric state.
