Abstract

In this study, graphene reinforced epoxy nanocomposites were fabricated by chemically modified graphene, and their mechanical properties were evaluated and compared with unmodified graphene reinforced epoxy nanocomposite. Graphene was synthesized by the thermal expansion and sonication process and was chemically modified by Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI). Three different weight percentage of modified and unmodified graphene was used to develop the nanocomposites. The results show that both the tensile strength and young’s modulus increases once the epoxy is reinforced with modified graphene filler. Besides, a significant improvement of young’s modulus is observed in the modified graphene reinforced nanocomposite with 1 wt% of modified graphene. Both the nanocomposites show greater results in mechanical properties as compared to the pure epoxy, yet, the modified graphene reinforced epoxy exhibits its superiority in mechanical properties than the unmodified graphene-epoxy nanocomposite.
