Abstract

We propose a Joint Measurement-based Admission and Bandwidth Control (JMABC) QoS provisioning scheme for real-time applications over Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) WLANs. JMABC offers a clean improvement on top of the existing WLANs as it combines the underlying DCF with layer-3 control mechanisms. The JMABC's control mechanisms come in two folds: 1) Active traffic flows are protected from the newly admitted flows through a measurement-based admission control policy and 2) The admitted real-time traffic flows are prioritized over the besteffort traffic through a packets scheduling scheme. Extensive simulation studies on throughput, packets delay, and jitter performances show that the proposed JMABC scheme can effectively enhance the performance of real-time applications over legacy DCF WLAN systems.
