N2 - This work presents a framework and prototype software interface for prototyping virtual two-dimensional gears and the required cutting tools. Geometry generation is handled in C++, which feeds an AutoLISP script to generate an accurate digital model of the gear profile geometry in AutoCAD. Unlike with commercial CAD built-in gear generators, both the working flanks and the tooth root geometry are modelled accurately, allowing the use of the virtual prototypes for CAM (tooling calculations) and CAE (bending stress and deflection analysis). The method and software presented is benchmarked against Inventor™, Solidworks™, as well as the specialised applications ProXpt™ and KISSsoft™.
