Personal profile

Personal profile

I joined The University of Nottingham as Professor in New Media, Communication and Cultural Studies in 2025 after spending 25 years as a media and communication academic at Murdoch University in Perth, Australia. Prior to joining UNNC, I was also Professor of Communication and Politics and Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at a private start-up university in Australia for 3 years between 2022-2024.

Prior to completing my PhD and entering academia, I was a Media Policy Executive with the former Singapore Broadcasting Authority (now known as the Info-Comm Media Development Authority or iMDA). I also had a brief stint as a media journalist in Singapore.

My research interests cut across new media, communication and cultural studies (hence my job title!) - but specifically, my work would  typically revolve around the following topics/sub-disciplines:

  • New media, Global Internet and AI governance;
  • Southeast Asian media and politics, with a focus on Singapore (and Malaysia);
  • Discourse on creativity and the creative industries;
  • Political communication;
  • Foucault and governmentality;
  • Cultural and media policy.
