A line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with solid rotor is developed and a method to study operating performance of this kind of motor is presented, in this paper. A 30kW solid rotor PMSM with simply structure was taken as the analysis model, and the numerical calculation model under some assumptions, as well as the solving regions of the derived model, is proposed. By using improved finite element method(FEM), static electromagnetic field with dynamic exciting source was analyzed, in which the terminal voltage and power was taken as the convergence conditions, and motor operating parameters as stator current, power factor could be determined. A method for testing inductance of PMSM was developed also by wave analysis. Some correlative factors such as load degree or size of bar and PM were investigated. The calculated results show good agreement with the experimental data. Some reasonable conclusions were obtained, which may be beneficial for design and research of this kind of motor.
