Production of coal macerai concentrates by flotation

Abstract

This chapter discusses the production of coal maceral concentration by floatation. It was possible with timed batch flotation tests to produce an inertinite-rich concentrate provided the only reagent added is a frother. Tests on point of Ayr coal show that with the addition of even small quantities of collector, (paraffin) this effect nullified to the point where there is no differential floatability among the macerals. Results from flotation tests on discrete size fractions of three coals produced widely differing inertinite enrichment ratios. This differential floatability is considered to be due to variations in the liberation characteristics of inertinite macerals.
