Abstract

"It reviews the history: founded in 1949, it held national day parades from 1950-1959, then stopped during the time of the Cultural Revolution. In 1984, there was a parade on October 1, but none had been held for 15 years. For the 1999 celebration, there was a 50-gun salute over Tian'anmen Square in honor of the country's 50th anniversary. For some 500000participants, there was a military parade and a civilian one, the latter representing periods led by Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, and Jiang Zemin. Overall, it was a demonstration to the world of what China had achieved in the last half century: military strength, social stability, racial harmony, determination to reunify the country, and, most importantly, "face engineering."" - book' introduction.
