Abstract

A new type of induction motor with compound cage rotor (IMCCR) composed of two different materials which include cast-aluminum and alloy is proposed, and the starting performances of the motor are improved using alloy material in the upper bars which can conduct magnetism and electricity. The operating performances of the motor are analyzed in the paper by using the Finite Element Method (FEM) employed to solve the two dimensional (2D) sinusoidal time-varying field, and the effect on the electromagnetic field distribution of rotor tooth, rotor slot and the motor performance is computed on the condition that the bar shape and material characteristics are changed. Also, some work is given to the analysis of the prototype motor' s operation performances at different loads. The calculated results compared with those of test values show that the rotor slot and material characteristic have some effects on magnetic field distribution and motor performance, and the characteristics and the future applications of this kind of motor are concluded, which could help optimum design of induction motors.
