Abstract

Provided within this chapter is an overview of the current state of the art for electric drives in passenger car battery electric vehicles. A concise summary of the drivers towards full electric vehicles is initially presented, with some discussion on the current basics of operation, relative merits and trends for the integration of the key subsystems within the vehicle. This is followed by descriptions of the current trends in passenger car drivetrain subsystem design covering the transmission, traction motor, inverter unit and battery pack. The chapter concludes with a life cycle analysis of a typical medium-sized vehicle electric powertrain, providing an additional context of the greenhouse gas impacts across key regions.
