Abstract
This paper first reviews the application of fault-tolerant machine drives as a means of reaching the necessary reliability levels in aerospace applications with minimum weight penalty. The requirements of such machines will be reviewed and different motor topologies will be compared. Three examples of fault-tolerant drive system demonstrators will then be described including a novel flux-switching, permanent magnet, synchronous machine topology.
