Abstract

This work aims to develop a method to detect delamination in composite laminates by utilizing the Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) method and the Duffing oscillator. The method is proposed to improve the sensitivity and accuracy in detecting delamination from the measured vibration signal of a composite laminated panel. The use of the EMD method is investigated as a time-frequency analysis method to decompose the vibration signal into a set of sub-signals called the Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs). By combining it with the use of a Duffing oscillator, the detection method using the IMFs can be improved in terms of its sensitivity in detecting small dynamic changes in the signal and its robustness to measurement noise. The Lyapunov Exponent (LE) parameter is then adopted to describe the chaotic behavior of a Duffing oscillator under different delamination sizes. The relationship between the delamination size and the LE of Duffing oscillator with various IMFs is investigated in this work.
