Abstract

Comparing to the upflow riser reactors, cocurrent gas-solid downflow fluidized bed (downer) reactors have several distinct advantages given their short residence time, more uniform gas-solid flow and reduced backmixing. This new type of short contact time reactors can potentially be used in such industrial processes as chemical, petroleum, petrochemical, energy and environmental processes. Downer reactor has also been considered as a new high efficiency reactor to substitute the riser reactor during the 21st century. In recent years, the development of downer reactors has attracted the attention of more and more academic researchers and industrial practitioners. In order to enhance the research and development of this technique, a comprehensive review on the subjects is provided in this series of four papers on the following aspects: I . Development and applications. II . Hydrodynamics. III. Gas and solid mixing. IV. Hydrodynamic modelling. The first paper summarizes the industrial developments achieved so far and the potential applications of downer reactors. In addition, the general hardware of downer reactors are also discussed.
