Abstract

Period poverty has a significant impact on the lives of women and girls. Through this study, it is identified that traditional culture has significant impact on period poverty in rural areas of China. This article analyzes the causes of the period poverty in the world, especially in Asia, combining the different situations to evaluate current Chinese situations and causes. Through the interviews with volunteers who offer free pads to the students in rural areas and questionaries carried out in people living in cities, the gap between the females in different areas and potential solutions are identified. In addition, a design solution named ‘blooming’ is developed in order to explore the possibilities to reduce the period poverty. The evaluation of the design shows that it can provide the under-age girls free sanitary products and physiological knowledge at the same time, and encourage the public to donate for the period poverty. However, it needs further user testing in the local environment to ensure it is acceptable and adjustable.
