Abstract

In recent years interest in the durability of adhesives has increased steadily, especially since joints made with adhesives in aircraft, have, after a number of years of flying time, suffered serious damage which has led to their complete failure. There is a large amount of experimental material available which deals with aging behavior. However, this material proves to be insufficient when drawn upon to explain to what extent the material and degree of cure parameters affect the adhesive and cohesive properties. This paper first analyzes thoroughly the cohesive failure mechanism and, on the basis of this analysis, constructs a model demonstrating the damage process. (
