Michael joined the University of Nottingham Ningbo China in 2018. Previously, he was a Visiting Research Fellow in the University of Wollongong, and a Senior Research Fellow at the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, the University of Melbourne.

Michael's main research interests focus on applied economics and applied econometrics. Specifically, his research involves the application of econometric modelling and techniques to address contemporary issues in economics, and developing econometric models and techniques. His research has spanned the fields of macroeconomics, energy economics, financial economics, and health economics. The domain of his applied work falls largely in time series econometrics. 

Michael's articles have featured in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, Journal of Applied Econometrics, Energy Economics, Econometric Reviews, Health Economics, International Journal of Forecasting, Economic Letters and amongst others
