Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the effect of L1 on the processing of L2 tense-aspect by adult Chinese and Arabic learners of English. A visual-world eye-tracking task, a sentence-matching task, and an acceptability judgement task were used to measure learners’ L2 implicit and explicit knowledge. Preliminary results suggest that L2 learners’ performance in online tasks was largely influenced by their respective L1s, indicating that late L2 learners may not be able to fully acquire L2 morphosyntactic structures that differ from those of their L1.
