Abstract
Traditionally speaking, teaching in university settings can often be highly didactic in nature, typically following a transmission-based pedagogy structured around lectures and seminars. This is especially true of universities in China, where teacher-centred delivery remains the norm and there is usually little opportunity for student interaction or experiential learning. In the case of vocationally-oriented teacher education programmes such as an MA TESOL, one of the inherent drawbacks of the traditional transmission model is that it implicitly encourages passive learning. This can result in students internalising educational theories as if they were established facts, rather than engaging with them more critically and trying to make relevant connections with their practice. This chapter reports on an attempt to break away from the didactic style of lecture delivery by applying technology-assisted experiential pedagogy. The chapter concludes that exposing students to such pedagogy can result in deeper learning and allow for more tangible links to be made between TESOL theory and TESOL practice.
