Abstract
This book rejects the stereotype of a resistance to state intervention by poorer "traditional" working class communities in Britain. It shows that levels of internal distrust within these communities instead created a desire for government action. It examines how these people felt about such things as the role of the police, mandatory health insurance, housing estate provision, and other public policies.
