Abstract
Circumferential and axial segmentation are effective in reducing eddy current losses in magnets of large-scale wind generators. However, improper segmentation strategies can induce uneven electromagnetic forces (EFs) with pronounced fluctuations, threatening the reliability of magnet immobilization. This paper investigates segment-level transient EFs and compares different segmentation strategies by jointly considering magnet fixation reliability and eddy current losses. The results indicate that axial-only segmentation with a sufficient number of segments provides a favorable compromise between magnet stability and eddy current loss reduction.
