Abstract

Identity research in second language acquisition (SLA) and second language teacher education (SLTE) attempts to (1) understand how, through language, an individual achieves a sense of belonging within a sociocultural context, and (2) how relationships change over time and space as individuals traverse physical and cultural borders. Building on these insights, this chapter explores how the construct of identity has gained wide purchase in these two broad strands within applied linguistics over the last two decades.
