Abstract

The rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) may present a significant opportunity for a profound revolution in operations and supply chain management. However, such technological advancement is accompanied by a scholarly discourse that navigates the balance between its promising abilities and challenges. This chapter provides an overview of generative AI in operations and supply chain management. It begins by expositing its fundamental technical concepts and role alongside existing AI technologies. Subsequently, it delves into potential applications and challenges in implementing generative AI in operations. A future research agenda and takeaways for practitioners and Operations Management (OM) researchers are proposed at the end.
