T1 - Flipping VR and Microlearning OERs to Teach English Presentation Skills to Students in a Sino-Foreign University

N2 - Presentation skills are vital, and virtual reality (VR) and microlearning can help students improve their presentation skills. However, most students may be unwilling to spend large amounts of money to purchase VR equipment. Phone-based VR has the potential to be a more affordable and accessible medium for learning presentation skills. Using Unity, a real-time engine used for creating 3D games and virtual reality applications, we created an Open Educational Resource (OER) that teaches English presentation skills to students in a Sino-foreign university through phone-based VR and microlearning. The OER was evaluated through user testing with first-year students. The results show that they had an overall positive impression of phone-based VR, and most students would use the OER to learn presentation skills. We concluded that a VR and microlearning OER shows potential for teaching English presentation skills, despite challenges with user discomfort and the graphics limitations of the phone-based VR platform. Future work will include adding additional features that support microlearning and flipped classrooms, and comparing the cost-performance ratios of phone-based VR and standalone VR headsets for teaching English presentation skills.
