Abstract

The existing literature has improved our understanding of online misinformation containing text and the countermeasures available to counteract it. However, limited attention has been put on misinformation containing visuals, despite the fact that such misinformation has been a problem for years. To alleviate this issue, we compile and review the existing literature about content characteristics of misinformation. In this study, we derived a framework based on the theoretical integration in an inductive manner to explain what and how content features of misinformation containing visual contents on social media influence its persuasiveness. Building on this framework, we suggest four propositions and propose a forward-looking research agenda to guide future works in information systems.
