Abstract
Noting that most core curriculum and "great books" curriculum in America focus mainly on Western literary and philosophical traditions, this paper argues for the benefit to Western-focused core curricula and core text programs for integrating Eastern literary and philosophical traditions. A world literature course assignment comparing Hamlet with the Chinese film The Banquet is discussed and sample responses from American students analyzed, demonstrating the pedagogical value of such comparative cultural analysis.
