Abstract
Nuclear fission is perhaps the most controversial, alongside renewables and clean coal, as one of the "trinity" of fuel option for future UK supply. A pressing need for the development of safe, reliable, economic and sustainable nuclear energy on the scale is required in both the short and long term. Therefore, a coordinated materials programme for the sustainable REduction of spent Fuel vital In a closed loop Nuclear Energy cycle (REFINE) has been established to fulfill these requirements. This is a multidisciplinary, multiinstitutional programme involving the Universities of Edinburgh, Nottingham, Cambridge and Manchester, University College London, and the National Nuclear Laboratory. The REFINE project aims to address the research challenges in legacy waste clean-up, fuel decommissioning and disposal, and specific spent fuel reprocessing technology suitable for Gen III+ and Gen IV reactor systems.
