Abstract

The paper provides an overview of energy shortage in the context of demand and supply of energy in the context of Japan after Fukushima incident. In line with the rapid urbanization, the demand of electricity is increasing, especially in building sector. It is thus deemed important to peruse the current status of available energy sources for generating electricity as well as opportunities in energy-saving measures in building sector. The recent nuclear incidents in Japan and in France bring about anti-nuclear safety concerns across the globe. A perspective on global attitudes towards nuclear energy is presented with particular focus being placed on the public perception of nuclear energy in Japan. The efforts of Japanese official and unofficial parties responded to the disastrous incident are also outlined. In order to focus the underlying importance of sustainable development against the shortage of energy demand, considering Japan's context, various energy-saving strategies adopted in Japan are described. In addition, other energy-saving tactics that are currently not adopted in Japan are also proposed.
